Ipilimumab injection is used alone or in combination with nivolumab (Opdivo) to treat certain types of melanoma (a type of skin cancer) that that has spread to other parts of the body or cannot be treated with surgery. It is also used alone to prevent melanoma from returning after surgery. Ipilimumab injection is also used in combination with nivolumab to treat certain types of renal cell cancer (a type of cancer that begins in the cells of the kidneys), colorectal cancer (cancer that begins in the large intestine), hepatocellular cancer (a type of liver cancer), esophageal cancer (cancer of the tube that connects your throat to your stomach), and malignant pleural mesothelioma (a type of cancer that affects the inside lining of the lungs and chest cavity). It is also used in combination with nivolumab and other chemotherapy medications to treat a certain type of lung cancer (non-small cell lung cancer, NSCLC). Ipilimumab injection is in a class of medications called monoclonal antibodies. It works by helping the body to slow or stop the growth of cancer cells. Your doctor will review your specific type of cancer and past treatment history and other available treatments to determine if ipilimumab is right for you.

Yervoy is a cancer medication that works by interfering with the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body. It is used to treat melanoma (skin cancer) that cannot be treated with surgery or has spread to other parts of the body. Yervoy is also used to prevent melanoma from coming back after surgery.

Injection routeYour doctor will prescribe your dose and schedule. This medicine is given through a needle placed in a vein. This medicine must be given slowly, so the needle will have to remain in place for at least 30 to 90 minutes.

Injection routeYou will receive this medicine while you are in a hospital or cancer treatment center. A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine.

Your doctor will give you other medicines (including steroid medicine) before you receive this medicine and during treatment to help prevent unwanted effects.

This medicine should come with a Medication Guide. Ask your pharmacist for a copy if you do not have one.

Missed dose: Injection routeThis medicine needs to be given on a fixed schedule. If you miss a dose, call your doctor, home health caregiver, or treatment clinic for instructions.

This medicine is not right for everyone. You should not receive it if you had an allergic reaction to ipilimumab, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Pain in the abdomen, diarrhea that may contain blood, fever

Numbness, tingling, or burning pain in your hands, arms, legs, or feet

Muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness

Lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting

Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

Injection routeMedicines used to treat cancer are very strong and can have many side effects. Before receiving this medicine, make sure you understand all the risks and benefits. It is important for you to work closely with your doctor during your treatment.

This medicine may cause the following problems: Enterocolitis (swelling inside the bowels)Liver problemsSerious skin reactions (including exfoliative dermatitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic syndrome (DRESS), or toxic epidermal necrolysis)Nerve problems, which may lead to paralysisAdrenal, pituitary, or thyroid gland problemsChanges in blood sugar levelsOther problems caused by the immune system, including pneumonitis (swelling of the lungs), nephritis (kidney problem), encephalitis (swelling of the brain), or eye or vision problemsInfusion reactionIncreased risk of possible organ transplant rejection

Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, an autoimmune disease (including Crohn disease, lupus, sarcoidosis, ulcerative colitis), muscle or nerve problems (including Guillain-Barré syndrome, myasthenia gravis), or if you have had a transplant.

Weakness, headaches, tiredness, weight changes, or feeling unusually cold or hot

Vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds

Sores, ulcers, or white spots in your mouth or on your lips

Do not breastfeed during treatment and for at least 3 months after your last dose.

Injection routeIt is not safe to take this medicine during pregnancy. It could harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant. If you are a woman who can get pregnant, your doctor may do tests to make sure you are not pregnant before starting this medicine. Use an effective form of birth control during treatment and for at least 3 months after your last dose.

  • Chest pain, trouble breathing, swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet
  • Lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting
  • Blurred vision, trouble seeing, eye pain, or other vision changes
  • Diarrhea that may contain blood
  • Weakness, headache, tiredness, weight changes, or feeling unusually cold or hot
  • Dark urine or pale stools, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, yellow skin or eyes
  • Sores, ulcers, or white spots in your mouth or on your lips
  • Blistering, peeling, or red skin rash
  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Joint pain
  • Constipation
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Skin rash, itching
  • Pain, itching, burning, swelling, or a lump under your skin where the needle is placed
