Spironolactone-Hctz

Spironolactone-HCTZ is indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension). This medication can also be used to treat heart failure and extra fluid in the body (edema). Spironolactone-HCTZ is a combination of spironolactone and hydrochlorothiazide (‘water pills’) and helps the body get rid of excess salt and water.

Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Take your medicine as directed. Your dose may need to be changed several times to find what works best for you.

Swallow the tablet whole. Do not break, crush, or chew it.

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to spironolactone, hydrochlorothiazide, or sulfa drugs, or if you cannot pass urine or have Addison disease.

Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness

Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine. This medicine may affect certain medical test results.

This medicine may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Wear sunscreen. Do not use sunlamps or tanning beds.

Do not stop using the medicine without asking your doctor, even if you feel well. This medicine will not cure your high blood pressure, but it will help keep it in normal range. You may have to take blood pressure medicine for the rest of your life.

This medicine may make you drowsy, dizzy, or lightheaded. Do not drive or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how this medicine affects you. Stand or sit up slowly if you are dizzy or lightheaded.

This medicine may cause the following problems:Eye or vision problems (including glaucoma, myopia)Gynecomastia (swelling of the breasts)Increased risk for skin cancer

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, glaucoma, gout, high cholesterol, lupus, trouble urinating, electrolyte imbalance, or a history of asthma or allergies (including a penicillin allergy).

Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

Alcohol, narcotic pain relievers, or sleeping pills may cause you to feel more lightheaded, dizzy, or faint when used with this medicine.

Ask your doctor before you use any medicine, supplement, or salt substitute that contains potassium. You could have high levels of potassium in your blood that would cause serious health problems.

Some foods and medicines can affect how spironolactone/hydrochlorothiazide works. Tell your doctor if you are also using the following:Acetylsalicylic acid, cholestyramine, digoxin, lithium, norepinephrineBlood thinner (including dalteparin, enoxaparin, heparin)Insulin or oral diabetes medicineMuscle relaxant (including tubocurarine)NSAID pain or arthritis medicine (including aspirin, diclofenac, indomethacin, naproxen)Other blood pressure medicine (including eplerenone, ACE inhibitors, ARBs)Steroid medicine (including hydrocortisone, methylprednisolone, prednisolone, prednisone)

• Dry mouth, increased thirst, muscle cramps or twitching, nausea, vomiting
• Problems urinating, pain in your side or lower back
• Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness
• Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
• Confusion, weakness, uneven heartbeat, trouble breathing, numbness or tingling in your hands, feet, or lips
• Stomach pain, vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds, blood in your stools or dark stools
• Lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting
• Eye pain, vision changes, seeing halos around lights
• Blistering, peeling, or red skin rash
• Sores, reddish patch or irritated area, shiny bump, pink growth, or white, yellow or waxy scar-like area on the skin
• Breast swelling, enlargement, pain, or tenderness
• Drowsiness or sleepiness
