Piperacillin and tazobactam injection is used to treat pneumonia and skin, gynecological, and abdominal (stomach area) infections caused by bacteria. Piperacillin is in a class of medications called penicillin antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria that cause infection. Tazobactam is in a class called beta-lactamase inhibitor. It works by preventing bacteria from destroying piperacillin. Antibiotics such as piperacillin and tazobactam injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking or using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
Zosyn is a prescription only medication that is used to treat bacterial injections such as urinary tract infections and pneumonia. Zosyn works by destroying harmful bacteria in the body. This medication is available as an Intravenous powder for injection and as an Intravenous solution.

Injection routeYour doctor will prescribe your dose and schedule. This medicine is given through a needle placed in a vein. The medicine must be injected slowly, so your IV tube will need to stay in place for at least 30 minutes.

This medicine is not right for everyone. You should not receive it if you had an allergic reaction to piperacillin, tazobactam, or similar antibiotic medicines.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, congestive heart failure, cystic fibrosis, or seizures. Tell your doctor if you have a history of allergies or are on a low-salt diet.
This medicine may cause the following problems:Serious skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), and drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS)Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a severe inflammatory condition that could be life-threateningBleeding problemsNerve problems, including seizuresKidney problems
This medicine can cause diarrhea. Call your doctor if the diarrhea becomes severe, does not stop, or is bloody. Do not take any medicine to stop diarrhea until you have talked to your doctor. Diarrhea can occur 2 months or more after you stop taking this medicine. It may occur 2 months or more after you stop using this medicine.
Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine. This medicine may affect certain medical test results.
Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.
Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

- Pain, itching, burning, swelling, or a lump under your skin where the needle is placed
- Seizures, swollen glands, new or worsening unsteadiness, problems with balance or muscle control
- Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
- Blistering, peeling, or red skin rash
- Bloody or watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever
- Change in how much or how often you urinate, painful or difficult urination, lower back or side pain
- Pain, itching, burning, swelling, or a lump under your skin where the needle is placed
- Headache, trouble sleeping
- Mild diarrhea, constipation, nausea
