Oxaliplatin is used with other medications to treat advanced colon or rectal cancer (cancer that begins in the large intestine). Oxaliplatin is also used with other medications to prevent colon cancer from spreading in people who have had surgery to remove the tumor. Oxaliplatin is in a class of medications called platinum-containing antineoplastic agents. It works by killing cancer cells.

Oxaliplatin is a prescription only medication used by patients diagnosed with rectal and colon cancer. It works by reducing and destroying the amount of cancer cells in the body. Oxaliplatin is available as an intravenous powder for injection and as an intravenous solution.

Injection routeYour doctor will prescribe your dose and schedule. This medicine is given through a needle placed in a vein. This medicine must be given slowly, so the needle will have to stay in place for at least 2 hours.

Do not breastfeed during treatment with this medicine and for at least 3 months after the last dose.

Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, heart failure, heart rhythm problems, or lung or breathing problems.

This medicine may cause dizziness, blurred vision, or other vision problems. Do not drive or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how this medicine affects you.

This medicine may make you bleed, bruise, or get infections more easily. Take precautions to prevent illness and injury. Wash your hands often.

This medicine could cause infertility. Talk with your doctor before using this medicine if you plan to have children.
