Mercaptopurine is used alone or with other chemotherapy drugs to treat acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL; also called acute lymphoblastic leukemia and acute lymphatic leukemia; a type of cancer that begins in the white blood cells). Mercaptopurine is in a class of medications called purine antagonists. It works by stopping the growth of cancer cells.

Mercaptopurine comes in the form of a tablet and is used as a treatment for acute lymphatic leukemia, which is a type of cancer that affects white blood cells. Mercaptopurine works by stopping the growth of cancer cells.

Oral routeMedicines used to treat cancer are very strong and can have many side effects. Before receiving this medicine, make sure you understand all the risks and benefits. It is important for you to work closely with your doctor during your treatment.

Take your medicine as directed. Your dose may need to be changed several times to find what works best for you.

This medicine is given together with certain other medicines. Follow your doctor's instructions on when to take these medicines.

Shake the bottle for at least 30 seconds to make sure the oral liquid is well mixed. Measure the oral liquid medicine with a marked measuring spoon, oral syringe, or medicine cup. Clean the dosing syringe with warm, soapy water after each use. Rinse the syringe well, and let it dry before you use it again.

Drink extra fluids so you will urinate more often and help prevent kidney problems.

Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Once opened, use the oral liquid within 8 weeks. Throw away any unused medicine after 8 weeks.

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to mercaptopurine, or if you are pregnant.

Oral routeThis medicine may cause birth defects if either partner is using it during conception or pregnancy. Tell your doctor right away if you or your partner becomes pregnant. Use an effective form of birth control during treatment with this medicine and for at least 6 months after the last dose. Male patients with female partners should use an effective form of birth control during treatment and for at least 3 months after the last dose.

Do not breastfeed during treatment with this medicine and for at least 1 week after the last dose.

Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, blood or bone marrow problems, autoimmune disease (including inflammatory bowel disease), or any type of infection (including Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus).

Do not use this medicine together with azathioprine unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Tell your doctor if you are using this medicine together with allopurinol. Your doctor may decrease your dose of the oral liquid.

This medicine may interfere with vaccines. Ask your doctor before you get a flu shot or any other vaccines.

Do not stop taking this medicine without checking first with your doctor.

Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.
