Eliquis

Drug Info for eliquis

Apixaban is used to help prevent strokes or blood clots in people who have atrial fibrillation (a condition in which the heart beats irregularly, increasing the chance of clots forming in the body and possibly causing strokes) that is not caused by heart valve disease. Apixaban is also used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT; a blood clot, usually in the leg) and pulmonary embolism (PE; a blood clot in the lung) in people who are having hip replacement or knee replacement surgery. Apixaban is also used to treat DVT and PE and may be continued to prevent DVT and PE from happening again after the initial treatment is completed. Apixaban is in a class of medications called factor Xa inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of a certain natural substance that helps blood clots to form.

Eliquis is a medication that prevents blood clots caused by irregular heart rhythms or after surgical hip/knee replacement. This drug works by blocking proteins that cause your blood to clot. Eliquis belongs to a group of drugs called anticoagulants. Eliquis is a brand version of the drug apixaban. This drug was approved by the US FDA in 2014. In the prevention of blood clots, Eliquis use is common.

Eliquis is a trademark brand name for apixaban. There is not a generic brand available for purchase today. Other brand name blood thinners include Pradaxa, Savaysa, and Xarelto. Always consult a doctor for medical advice to decide which anti-clotting medicine is right for you.

If you have an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) or have recently undergone a hip or knee replacement surgery, your doctor may prescribe Eliquis. Eliquis is the brand name for apixaban, which is an anticoagulant. It’s used to prevent and treat blood clots, particularly in the veins of your legs (deep vein thrombosis or DVT) and lungs (pulmonary embolism). If you’ve recently had a blood clot, your doctor might use Eliquis to prevent another clot from forming. Your body can produce proteins that thicken your blood into a gel consistency, which could eventually form a clot and increase your risk for stroke; Eliquis works by blocking those proteins.

Eliquis is available as an oral tablet in strengths of 2.5 mg and 5 mg. Eliquis is commonly taken by mouth twice daily or every 12 hours, so you will likely receive a 30-day supply of 60 tablets. Follow your doctor's instructions for dosage and use of this medication. Some factors your doctor will consider when prescribing Eliquis include your age, medical condition, kidney function, and, if applicable, the type of surgery that you had.

Eliquis is a blood thinner, so side effects could include susceptibility to bruising and minor bleeding such as nosebleeds. Contact your doctor right away if you experience unusual bruising, swelling, chest pain, or prolonged bleeding, such as nosebleeds, bleeding from cuts or menstrual flow. Allergic reactions to Eliquis are rare, but you should seek immediate medical attention if you experience side effects such as dizziness, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing or swallowing. Note: This is not a complete list of possible side effects.

Before taking Eliquis, you should discuss possible dietary restrictions with your doctor. He or she may suggest avoiding the following foods:

  • Vitamin K-rich foods, including some vegetables and vegetable oils
  • Cranberries and products containing cranberry juice
  • Grapefruit and products containing grapefruit juice
  • Alcohol
Other possible interactions of Eliquis include additional apixaban medication, such as over-the-counter aspirin.

All patients can get a discount on Eliquis by using their free OptionRx card, which may be cheaper than your cost with health insurance or Medicare coverage. Eligible patients may also qualify for financial assistance through the Bristol-Myers Squibb company and its patient assistance programs. Use our OptionRx pricing tool and ask your pharmacist to ensure that you’re getting the best discount on Eliquis that’s available.
