Diflunisal is used to relieve pain, tenderness, swelling and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis (arthritis caused by a breakdown of the lining of the joints) and rheumatoid arthritis (arthritis caused by swelling of the lining of the joints). Diflunisal is also used to relieve mild to moderate pain from other causes. Diflunisal is in a class of medications called NSAIDs. It works by stopping the body's production of a substance that causes pain, fever, and inflammation.

Take your medicine as directed. Your dose may need to be changed several times to find what works best for you.

Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, break, or chew it.

This medicine should come with a Medication Guide. Ask your pharmacist for a copy if you do not have one.

Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to diflunisal, aspirin, or other NSAIDs. Do not use this medicine right before or right after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG).

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not use this medicine during the later part of a pregnancy, unless your doctor tells you to.

Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, anemia, asthma, bleeding disorder, or a history of stomach or bowel problems (including ulcers, bleeding).

Numbness or weakness in your arm or leg, or on one side of your body.

Pain in your lower leg (calf).

Problems with vision, speech, or walking.

Rapid weight gain.

Severe pain in your upper stomach.

Shortness of breath, cold sweat, and bluish-colored skin.

Skin rash or blisters with fever.

Sudden or severe headache.

Swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet.

Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness.

Vomiting blood or something that looks like coffee grounds.

Yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes.

Some medicines can affect how diflunisal works. Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following:Acetaminophen, cyclosporine, lithium, methotrexate, naproxen, sulindacBlood pressure medicine (including ACE inhibitors, ARBs, beta blockers)Blood thinner (including warfarin)Diuretic (water pill)Medicine to treat depression (including SNRIs, SSRIs)Steroid medicineStomach medicine (including antacids)

Do not use aspirin or any other NSAID medicine (including diclofenac, ibuprofen, naproxen, salsalate) unless your doctor says it is okay.

Do not drink alcohol while you are using this medicine.

This medicine can cause a rare but serious illness called Reye's syndrome. It occurs mostly in children and teenagers, but can affect someone at any age. Do not give this medicine to anyone who has chicken pox or symptoms of a virus or the flu, unless your doctor has told you to. If a child has behavior changes along with nausea and vomiting while using this medicine, call the doctor right away.

Your doctor will check your progress and the effects of this medicine at regular visits. Keep all appointments.
