Drug Info for diethylpropion hcl er

Diethylpropion decreases appetite. It is used on a short-term basis (a few weeks), in combination with diet, to help you lose weight. This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to use. Do not use more than directed.

Take the immediate-release tablets 1 hour before meal.

Swallow the extended-release tablets whole. Do not break, crush, or chew it.

Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to diethylpropion, or if you also use any other stimulant or diet pill. Do not use this medicine if you are feeling agitated, or if you have glaucoma, overactive thyroid, a history of heart and blood vessel disease (including high blood pressure, clogged arteries, arrhythmia, or pulmonary hypertension), or a history of drug use disorder.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, heart rhythm problems, a history of drug use disorder, or seizures.

This medicine may cause the following problems:Increased risk of pulmonary hypertension (increased blood pressure in the lungs)Heart or blood vessel problem, including valvular heart diseaseIncreased risk of seizures

This medicine may cause some people to become dizzy, lightheaded, or less alert than they are normally. Do not drive or do anything that could be dangerous until you know how this medicine affects you.

This medicine can be habit-forming. Do not use more than your prescribed dose. Call your doctor if you think your medicine is not working.

Do not stop using this medicine suddenly. Your doctor will need to slowly decrease your dose before you stop it completely.

Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

Tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking diethylpropion before having any kind of surgery.

Do not use this medicine if you are taking or have taken other medicines that reduce appetite within the past year (including dexfenfluramine, fenfluramine).

Do not use this medicine if you are using or have used an MAO inhibitor within the past 14 days.

Some medicines can affect how diethylpropion works. Tell your doctor if you are using guanethidine, insulin, or methyldopa.

If the medicine does not seem to work as well after a few weeks, talk to your doctor. You should not use more of it than your doctor prescribed.

This medicine may make you dizzy or feel "high." Be careful if you are driving a car or using machinery.

For patients with diabetes, this medicine may change the level of sugar in your blood or urine. Tell your doctor if your tests for sugar in blood or urine change.

Talk with your doctor before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeat
  • Seizures
  • Swelling of the feet or lower legs, trouble breathing
  • Skin rash, severe itching or hives
  • Blurred vision, confusion, or hallucinations
  • Uncontrolled body movements or seizures
  • Unexplained fever or sore throat
  • Nausea, vomiting, or stomach cramps
  • Constipation, diarrhea
  • Bad taste in the mouth or dry mouth
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Bad taste in your mouth, dry mouth
  • Decreased interest in sexual intercourse, inability to have or keep an erection
