Dexrazoxane injection (Totect, Zinecard) is used to prevent or decrease thickening of the heart muscles caused by doxorubicin in women who are taking the medication to treat breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. Dexrazoxane injection (Totect, Zinecard) is only given to women who have already received a certain amount of doxorubicin and who will need continued doxorubicin treatment, it is not used to prevent heart damage in women who are starting treatment with doxorubicin. Dexrazoxane injection (Totect) is used to decrease damage to the skin and tissues that may be caused when an anthracycline chemotherapy medication such as daunorubicin (Cerubidine), doxorubicin (Adriamycin, Doxil), epirubicin (Ellence) or idarubicin (Idamycin) leaks out of a vein as it is being injected. Dexrazoxane injection is in classes of medications called cardioprotectants and chemoprotectants. It works by stopping the chemotherapy medications from damaging the heart and the tissues.

Dexrazoxane is used to protect the heart and other tissues from harmful side effects caused by caused by cancer chemotherapy medications such as doxorubicin treatment.

Injection routeYour doctor will prescribe your dose and schedule. This medicine is given through a needle placed in a vein. It must be given slowly, so the needle will have to stay in place for 1 to 2 hours. If you are also taking doxorubicin: You will receive this medicine over 15 minutes before your doxorubicin treatment.

If you are using an ice pack or any other cooling procedure at the affected area, you may have to remove it at least 15 minutes before receiving this medicine.

Injection routeYou will receive this medicine while you are in a hospital or cancer treatment center. A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine.

Missed dose: Injection routeThis medicine needs to be given on a fixed schedule. If you miss a dose, call your doctor, home health caregiver, or treatment clinic for instructions.

Read and follow the patient instructions that come with this medicine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.

This medicine is not right for everyone. You should not receive it if you are pregnant.

This medicine can increase your risk for certain cancers, including leukemia. Talk to your doctor if you have questions or concerns.

Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

Talk with your doctor before receiving this medicine if you plan to have children. Some men who use this medicine have become infertile (unable to have children).

If you are also taking doxorubicin: This medicine may not protect your heart completely. It is important to tell your doctor if you have any symptoms of heart problems, including trouble breathing, chest pain, lightheadedness, dizziness, or a fast or uneven heartbeat.

This medicine may cause birth defects if either partner is using it during conception or pregnancy. Tell your doctor right away if you or your partner becomes pregnant. Use an effective form of birth control during treatment with this medicine and for at least 6 months after the last dose. Male patients with female partners should use an effective form of birth control during treatment and for 3 months after the last dose.

Do not breastfeed during treatment with this medicine and for 2 weeks after your last dose.

Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease, or a blood disorder.

This medicine may make you bleed, bruise, or get infections more easily. Take precautions to prevent illness and injury. Wash your hands often.

Some medicines may affect how dexrazoxane works. Tell your doctor if you are also using other cancer treatments or topical dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO).

  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Pain, burning, redness, or swelling under your skin where the needle is placed
