Injection routeA nurse or other health provider will give you this medicine. This medicine is given as a shot into a muscle or into a vein.

An IV injection is given through a small tube that is put in one of your veins, usually in your arm, wrist, or hand.

An IM injection is a shot given in the muscle of your upper arm, thigh, or buttocks.

If you miss your appointment for this test, call your doctor.

This medicine is not right for everyone. You should not receive this medicine if you had an allergic reaction to cosyntropin.

Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Some medicines can affect how cosyntropin works. Tell your doctor if you are using long-acting glucocorticoids.

Do not take spironolactone or glucocorticoids on the day of cosyntropin testing. Do not take medicines that contain estrogen 4 to 6 weeks before receiving this medicine.

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Blurred vision, dizziness, headache, nervousness, pounding in the ears
  • Chest pain
  • Fast, slow, pounding, or irregular heartbeat
  • Rapid weight gain, swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet
  • Skin rash
