Cortifoam

Drug Info for cortifoam

Rectal hydrocortisone is used along with other medications to treat proctitis (swelling in the rectum) and ulcerative colitis (a condition which causes swelling and sores in the lining of the large intestine and rectum). It is also used to relieve itching and swelling from hemorrhoids and other rectal problems. Hydrocortisone is in a class of medications called corticosteroids. It works by activating natural substances in the skin to reduce swelling, redness, and itching.

Cortifoam is a rectal foam enema that is used to treat swelling, itching, and hemorrhoids in the rectum and anus. Patients suffering from ulcerative colitis, proctitis, and other inflammatory conditions of the rectum can use Cortifoam along with other medications to treat their condition. The generic name for Cortifoam is hydrocortisone, though a generic equivalent to Cortifoam is not currently sold in the US. A 15 g tube of 10% strength Cortifoam costs about $470 without insurance.
