Drug Info for captopril

Captopril is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. It is also used to improve survival and reduce the risk of heart failure after a heart attack in patients a heart condition called left ventricular hypertrophy (enlargement of the walls of the left side of the heart). Captopril is also used to treat kidney disease (nephropathy) caused by diabetes in patients with type 1 diabetes and retinopathy (eye disease). Captopril is in a class of medications called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It decreases certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels, so blood flows more smoothly and the heart can pump blood more efficiently. High blood pressure is a common condition, and when not treated it can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.

Captopril is a medication used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Captopril belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Captopril is a generic drug also sold under the trade name Capoten. This drug was developed in 1975 and became available generically in 1996. In the treatment of high blood pressure and heart failure, captopril use is common.

Take your medicine as directed. Your dose may need to be changed several times to find what works best for you.

Take this medicine 1 hour before meals.

Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to captopril or another ACE inhibitor, or if you are pregnant, or if you have a history of angioedema caused by an ACE inhibitor.

Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

It is not safe to take this medicine during pregnancy. It could harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant.

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding, or if you have kidney problems, liver disease, heart or blood vessel disease, heart valve problems, diabetes, or an autoimmune disorder (including lupus or scleroderma).

This medicine may cause the following problems:Angioedema (severe swelling), including head, neck, and intestinal swellingLow blood pressureLiver problemsKidney problems

This medicine could lower your blood pressure too much, especially when you first use it or if you are dehydrated. Stand or sit up slowly if you feel lightheaded or dizzy.

Do not stop using this medicine without asking your doctor, even if you feel well. Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine.

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
