Nitazoxanide

Drug Info for nitazoxanide

Nitazoxanide is used to treat diarrhea in adults and children older than 1 year of age caused by the protozoa Cryptosporidium or Giardia. Protozoa are suspected as the cause when diarrhea lasts more than 7 days. Nitazoxanide is in a class of medications called antiprotozoal agents. It works by stopping the growth of certain protozoa that cause diarrhea.

Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Shake the oral liquid well before using. Measure the oral liquid medicine with a marked measuring spoon, oral syringe, or medicine cup.

Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to use. Do not use more than directed.

Oral routeIt is best to take this medicine with food or milk.

Use only the form of this medicine that your doctor prescribed. The oral liquid and tablet forms contain different amounts of medicine.

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. The mixed oral liquid can be stored at room temperature for 7 days. Throw away any unused medicine after 7 days.

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to nitazoxanide.

Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

Your doctor will check your progress and the effects of this medicine at regular visits. Keep all appointments.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a weak immune system (such as HIV or AIDS).

Some foods and medicines can affect how nitazoxanide works. Tell your doctor if you are using a blood thinner, including warfarin.

Use only the form of this medicine that your doctor prescribed. The liquid and tablet forms contain different amounts of medicine.

The liquid form of this medicine contains sugar. This is especially important if you or your child has diabetes.

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
