Olanzapine extended-release injection is used to treat schizophrenia (a mental illness that causes disturbed or unusual thinking, loss of interest in life, and strong or inappropriate emotions). Olanzapine injection is used to treat episodes of agitation in people who have schizophrenia or in people who have bipolar I disorder (manic depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of severe mania, and other abnormal moods) and are experiencing an episode of mania (abnormally excited or irritated mood). Olanzapine is in a class of medications called atypical antipsychotics. It works by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain.

Zyprexa Relprevv is an antipsychotic drug used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It helps to restore the balance of certain chemicals in the brain. Zyprexa Relprevv is indicated for use by adults and is available as an injection.

This medicine may make it more difficult for your body to cool down. Be careful to not become overheated during exercise or hot weather, because you could have heat stroke.

This medicine may make you dizzy or drowsy, or may cause trouble with thinking or controlling body movement, which may lead to falls, fractures, or other injuries. Do not drive or do anything that could be dangerous until you know how this medicine affects you. You may also feel lightheaded when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position, so stand up slowly.

Do not breastfeed while you are using this medicine.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, glaucoma, prostate problems, problems with passing urine, breast cancer, seizures, or severe constipation. Tell your doctor if you have any kind of heart or circulation problems, including low blood pressure, heart failure, heart rhythm problems, or a history of a heart attack or stroke.

You might get overheated while using this medicine. Drink plenty of water during hot weather, while exercising, or while using a hot tub or sauna. If your body gets too hot, you might feel dizzy, weak, tired, or confused. You might have an upset stomach or vomit. Call your doctor if drinking cool water and moving away from the heat does not cool you down.

This medicine may cause post-injection delirium/sedation syndrome. Tell your doctor right away if you have the following symptoms: convulsions (seizures), dizziness, drowsiness, sleepiness, or confusion as to time, place, or person after receiving the injection.

Tardive dyskinesia (a movement disorder) may occur and may not go away after you stop using the medicine. Check with your doctor right away if you have any of the following symptoms while taking this medicine: lip smacking or puckering, puffing of the cheeks, rapid or worm-like movements of the tongue, uncontrolled chewing movements, or uncontrolled movements of the arms and legs.

Check with your doctor right away if you have any of the following symptoms while using this medicine: convulsions (seizures), difficulty with breathing, a fast heartbeat, a high fever, high or low blood pressure, increased sweating, loss of bladder control, severe muscle stiffness, unusually pale skin, or tiredness. These could be symptoms of a serious condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS).

This medicine may increase the amount of sugar in your blood. Check with your doctor right away if you have increased thirst or increased urination. If you have diabetes, you may notice a change in the results of your urine or blood sugar tests. If you have any questions, check with your doctor.

This medicine may make you dizzy or drowsy. Avoid driving, using machines, or doing anything else that could be dangerous if you are not alert. You may also feel lightheaded when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position, so stand up slowly.

Some medicines can affect how olanzapine works. Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following:Carbamazepine, diazepam, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, levodopa, omeprazole, or rifampinBlood pressure medicine

Tell your doctor if you use anything else that makes you sleepy. Some examples are allergy medicine, narcotic pain medicine, and alcohol.

Tell your doctor if you smoke tobacco. You might need a different amount of this medicine if you smoke.

This medicine may increase your weight. Your doctor may need to check your weight regularly during treatment with this medicine.

Do not drink alcohol while you are using this medicine.

You must be careful if you are also using other medicine that might cause similar side effects as olanzapine. Make sure your doctor knows about all other medicines you are using.

  • Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness
  • Fever, chills, cough, sore throat, body aches
  • Jerky muscle movement you cannot control (often in your face, tongue, or jaw)
  • Lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting
  • Seizures or tremors
  • Sweating, confusion, uneven heartbeat, muscle stiffness
  • Swollen breasts, or liquid discharge from your nipples (men or women)
  • Swollen, painful, or tender lymph glands in neck, armpit, or groin
  • Trouble breathing or swallowing
  • Unusual behavior, thoughts of hurting yourself or others
  • Feeling very thirsty or hungry, change in how much or how often you urinate
  • Eye pain, trouble seeing
  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Sleepiness or unusual drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation, upset stomach
  • Pain, itching, burning, swelling, or a lump under your skin where the shot was given
  • Headache, tiredness
  • Weight gain
