Prescription lidocaine transdermal (Dermalid, Lidoderm, Ztildo) is used to relieve the pain of post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN; burning, stabbing pains, or aches that may last for months or years after a shingles infection). Nonprescription (over-the-counter) lidocaine (Absorbine Jr, Aspercreme, Lidocare, Salonpas, others) is also available to relieve minor pain in shoulders, arms, neck and legs in adults and children 12 years of age and older. Lidocaine is in a class of medications called local anesthetics. It works by stopping nerves from sending pain signals.

Transdermal routeYour doctor will tell you how many patches to use, where to apply them, and how often to apply them. Do not use more patches or apply them more often than your doctor tells you to.

This medicine should be used only on the skin. Do not get it in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If it does get on these areas, rinse it off with water or saline right away.

Keep the patch in its envelope until you are ready to put it on. You may cut the patch into a smaller size with scissors before you take off the patch liner.

Transdermal routeWash your hands with soap and water before and after applying a patch.

The patch will not stick if it gets wet. Do not wear it when you take a bath or shower, or when you go swimming.

Apply the patch to clean, dry skin. Transdermal routeDo not put the patch over burns, cuts, or irritated skin.

Do not wear the patch for longer than 12 hours in any 24-hour period.

Transdermal routeStore the patches at room temperature in a closed container, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.

Transdermal routeFold the used patch in half with the sticky sides together. Throw any used patch away so that children or pets cannot get to it. You will also need to throw away old patches after the expiration date has passed.

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to lidocaine or similar medicines.

Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have liver disease. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any other medicine.

Do not use a heating pad, electric blanket, or other heat source over the patch. .

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
