A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine. It is given through a needle placed into one of your veins, into your upper arm, into the head and neck area, or into the space around the spinal nerves in your lower back.

This medicine is not right for everyone. You should not receive it if you had an allergic reaction to lidocaine or similar medicines.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, blood vessel disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, brain or nerve disease, spine problems, G6PD, a blood disorder, or lung or breathing problems. Tell your doctor if you have a sulfite allergy.

This medicine may cause methemoglobinemia (blood disorder).

You may experience temporary loss of sensation and movement, usually in the lower half of your body, if you receive this medicine into your lower back (epidural).

Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine. This medicine may affect certain medical test results.

Loss of ability to have sex.

Ringing in ears, or seizures (convulsions).

Uneven, pounding, fast, or slow heartbeat.

Some medicines can affect how lidocaine/epinephrine works. Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following:Acetaminophen, chloroquine, metoclopramide, primaquine, quinine, sulfasalazineBlood pressure medicineCancer medicine (including cyclophosphamide, flutamide, hydroxyurea, ifosfamide, rasburicase)Ergot medicineMedicine to treat an infection (including dapsone, nitrofurantoin, para-aminosalicylic acid, sulfonamide)Medicine to treat depression or mental illnessMedicine to treat seizures (including phenobarbital, phenytoin, sodium valproate)Nitrate or nitrite medicine (including nitric oxide, nitroglycerin, nitroprusside, nitrous oxide)Phenothiazine medicine

Make sure your doctor knows if you are using a phenothiazine medicine, such as prochlorperazine, Compazine®, Mellaril®, Phenergan®, Thorazine®, or Trilafon®. These medicines can be used to treat severe vomiting, psychiatric (mental) problems, or other conditions.

Tell you doctor about any other medicine or dietary supplement you have used recently.

Some of this medicine may get into your spinal cord because the medicine is put into your back. Your care giver should discuss this with you before you receive the medicine.

  • Anxiety, confusion, depression, dizziness, drowsiness
  • Lightheadedness, nervousness, restlessness, blurred or double vision, twitching
  • Pale, gray, or blue lips, nails, or skin, dark urine, headache, unusual tiredness or weakness
  • Pain or swelling where the needle went into your back.
  • Pain, itching, burning, swelling, or a lump under your skin where the needle is placed
  • Headache.
