Trimethobenzamide Hcl

Drug Info for trimethobenzamide hcl

Trimethobenzamide is used to treat nausea and vomiting that may occur after surgery. It is also used to control nausea caused by gastroenteritis ('stomach flu'; a virus that may cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea). Trimethobenzamide is in a class of medications called antihistamines. Trimethobenzamide may work by decreasing activity in the area of the brain that causes nausea and vomiting.

Tigan comes in the form of an intramuscular solution and is used to treat nausea and vomiting associated with surgery or caused by stomach flu. It works by affecting the area of the brain that stimulates nausea and vomiting. Tigan is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old. Common side effects may include headache, muscle cramps, dizziness and drowsiness.

Take your medicine as directed. Your dose may need to be changed several times to find what works best for you.

Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to trimethobenzamide.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, brain disease, or Reye syndrome.

This medicine may cause the following problems:Extrapyramidal symptoms (muscle and nerve disorders)Liver problems

This medicine may make you dizzy, drowsy, or less alert. Do not drive or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how this medicine affects you.

Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

Some medicines can affect how trimethobenzamide works. Tell your doctor if you are using medicine for mental problems.

Do not drink alcohol while you are using this medicine.

Tell your doctor if you use anything else that makes you sleepy. Some examples are allergy medicine, narcotic pain medicine, and alcohol.

  • Dark urine or pale stools, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, yellow skin or eyes
  • Seizures
  • Headache
  • Blurred vision
  • Muscle cramps
  • Mild diarrhea
