Triptorelin injection (Trelstar) is used to treat the symptoms associated with advanced prostate cancer. Triptorelin injection (Triptodur) is used to treat central precocious puberty (CPP; a condition causing children to enter puberty too soon, resulting in faster than normal bone growth and development of sexual characteristics) in children 2 years and older. Triptorelin injection is in a class of medications called gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists. It works by decreasing the amount of certain hormones in the body.

Missed dose: Injection routeThis medicine needs to be given on a fixed schedule. If you miss a dose, call your doctor, home health caregiver, or treatment clinic for instructions.

Injection routeA nurse or other health provider will give you this medicine.

Injection routeYour doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given. This medicine is given as a shot into one of your muscles.

This medicine should come with a Medication Guide. Ask your pharmacist for a copy if you do not have one.

This medicine is not right for everyone. You should not receive it if you had an allergic reaction to triptorelin or similar medicines.

Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, bladder blockage, diabetes, heart or blood vessel disease, heart failure, heart rhythm problems, or a history of seizures, depression, or mental problems.

This medicine may cause the following problems:Changes in mood or behaviorIncreased risk for seizuresHeart rhythm problems (including QT prolongation)Increased risk of high blood sugar or cholesterol levelsIncreased risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver diseaseIncreased risk of heart attack or strokeIntracranial hypertension or pseudotumor cerebri (increased pressure in the head) in children

Talk with your doctor before using this medicine if you plan to have children. Some men who use this medicine have become infertile (unable to have children).

Your symptoms may get worse for a few weeks when you begin to use this medicine to treat advanced prostrate cancer. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns.

Your child's symptoms might get worse when you first start using this medicine to treat premature puberty, but they should get better as the medicine starts to work. If your child's condition does not begin to improve after using this medicine for 2 months, check with your doctor.

Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine. This medicine may affect certain medical test results.

Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

Some medicines can affect how triptorelin works. Tell your doctor if you are using medicines that can increase prolactin levels in the blood or medicines to treat depression (including bupropion).

This medicine may cause the following problems:Heart rhythm problems (such as QT prolongation)Changes in blood sugar levelIncreased risk of heart attack or stroke

  • Weakness or loss of muscle control, especially in your legs or feet
  • Trouble breathing
  • Seizures
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Blurred or change in vision, eye pain, dizziness, severe headache, nausea, vomiting
  • Change in how much or how often you urinate, bloody or cloudy urine, difficult or painful urination
  • Depression, mood or behavior changes
  • Fast, slow, pounding, or uneven heartbeat
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning pain in your hands, arms, legs, or feet
  • Decreased interest in sex, inability to have or maintain an erection
  • Increased hunger or thirst
  • Warmth or redness in your face, neck, arms, or upper chest
  • Bone, back, leg, or joint pain
  • Pain, itching, burning, swelling, or a lump under your skin where the shot was given
  • Warmth or redness in your face, neck, arms, or upper chest
