Nivolumab injection is used alone or in combination with ipilimumab (Yervoy) to treat certain types of melanoma (a type of skin cancer) in adults and children 12 years of age or older that has spread to other parts of the body or cannot be removed by surgery. It is also used alone to prevent melanoma from returning after surgery. Nivolumab injection is also used in alone or in combination with ipilimumab and/or other chemotherapy medications to treat certain types of lung cancer (non-small cell lung cancer; NSCLC), renal cell cancer (a type of cancer that begins in the cells of the kidneys), Hodgkin's lymphoma (Hodgkin's disease), head and neck cancer, urothelial cancer (cancer of the lining of the bladder and other parts of the urinary tract), colorectal cancer (cancer that begins in the large intestine), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC; a type of liver cancer), esophageal cancer (cancer of the tube that connects your throat to your stomach), gastric cancer (cancer of the stomach) or gastroesophageal junction cancer (cancer located in the area where the stomach meets the esophagus), and malignant pleural mesothelioma (a type of cancer that affects the inside lining of the lungs and chest cavity). Nivolumab is in a class of medications called monoclonal antibodies. It works by helping your immune system to slow or stop the growth of cancer cells. Your doctor will review your specific type of cancer and past treatment history and other available treatments to determine if nivolumab is right for you.

Opdivo is used to treat melanoma that has spread to other parts of the body. It also treats non-small cell lung cancer after other treatments have been unsuccessful or cancer has spread. Opdivo stops the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body. It is indicated for the use by patients 12 years and older. This medication is available as an injection.

Injection routeYour doctor will prescribe your dose and schedule. This medicine is given through a needle placed in a vein. It must be given slowly, so the needle will have to remain in place for at least 30 minutes.

Injection routeYou will receive this medicine while you are in a hospital or cancer treatment center. A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine.

Your doctor will give you other medicines (including steroid medicine) before you receive this medicine and during treatment to help prevent unwanted effects.

This medicine should come with a Medication Guide. Ask your pharmacist for a copy if you do not have one.

Missed dose: Injection routeThis medicine needs to be given on a fixed schedule. If you miss a dose, call your doctor, home health caregiver, or treatment clinic for instructions.

This medicine is not right for everyone. You should not receive it if you had an allergic reaction to nivolumab, or if you are pregnant.

Injection routeIt is not safe to take this medicine during pregnancy. It could harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant. If you are a woman who can bear children, your doctor may give you a pregnancy test before you start using this medicine to make sure you are not pregnant. Use an effective form of birth control during treatment with this medicine and for at least 5 months after your last dose.

Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with this medicine and for at least 5 months after your last dose.

Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, lung or breathing problems, Crohn disease, diabetes, stomach or bowel problems, immune system problems, lupus, thyroid problems, or if you have had a transplant.

This medicine may cause the following problems because of the way it affects your immune system:Severe inflammation, including pneumonitis (lungs), colitis (bowels), hepatitis (liver), nephritis (kidneys), encephalitis (around the brain), or eye or vision problemsAdrenal, pituitary, or thyroid gland problemsChanges in blood sugar levelsKidney problemsSerious skin reactionsInfusion reactions, which could be severeIncreased risk for possible transplant problems

Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

Diarrhea that may contain blood, severe stomach pain

Fever, chills, trouble breathing, dizziness, or skin rash while receiving the infusion

Severe joint or muscle pain

Weakness, headache, tiredness, weight changes, feeling cold, or changes in mood or behavior

  • Weakness, headache, tiredness, weight changes, feeling cold, changes in mood or behavior
  • Diarrhea that may contain blood, severe stomach pain
  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Confusion, seizures, stiff neck, headache, sleepiness
  • Blistering, peeling, red skin rash
  • Bloody or cloudy urine, decrease in how much or how often you urinate, swelling of your face, feet, or lower legs
  • Cough, chest tightness or pain, trouble breathing
  • Fever, chills, dizziness, or skin rash while receiving the infusion
  • Blurred vision, trouble seeing, eye pain, or other vision changes
  • Increased hunger or thirst, dry mouth, sweating
  • Dark urine or pale stools, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, yellow skin or eyes
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning pain in your hands, arms, legs, or feet
  • Slow or fast heartbeat
  • Severe joint or muscle pain, back pain
  • Rash, redness, pain, swelling, or blisters on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet
  • Constipation, diarrhea
  • Sores or white patches on your lips, mouth, or throat
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Pain, itching, burning, swelling, or a lump under your skin where the needle is placed
