Drug Info for meclofenamate sodium

Meclofenamate is used to relieve pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis (arthritis caused by a breakdown of the lining of the joints) and rheumatoid arthritis (arthritis caused by swelling of the lining of the joints). It is also used to relieve other types of mild to moderate pain, including menstrual pain (pain that happens before or during a menstrual period). It also may be used to decrease bleeding in women who have abnormally heavy menstrual blood loss. Meclofenamate is in a class of medications called NSAIDs. It works by stopping the body's production of a substance that causes pain, fever, and inflammation.

Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Take your medicine as directed. Your dose may need to be changed several times to find what works best for you.

Oral routeIt is best to take this medicine with food or milk.

This medicine should come with a Medication Guide. Ask your pharmacist for a copy if you do not have one.

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. .

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to meclofenamate, aspirin, or other NSAIDs. Do not use it right before or after a heart surgery called coronary artery bypass graft (CABG).

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, asthma, high blood pressure, heart or blood vessel problems, heart failure, a recent heart attack, or a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding problems. Tell your doctor if you smoke or drink alcohol.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Do not use this medicine during the later part of a pregnancy, unless your doctor tells you to.

This medicine may cause the following problems:Increased risk of blood clots, heart attack, stroke, or heart failureStomach or bowel problems (including bleeding, ulcers, or perforation)Liver problemsHigh blood pressureKidney problemsSerious skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, exfoliative dermatitis, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS)

Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

Yellowing of skin or eyes

Decreased amount of urine

Severe stomach pain or vomiting blood

Black, tarry or bloody stools

Do not drink alcohol while you are using this medicine.

Do not use aspirin or any other NSAID medicine (including diflunisal, ibuprofen, naproxen, salsalate) unless your doctor says it is okay.

Some medicines can affect how meclofenamate works. Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following:Lithium, methotrexateBlood pressure medicine (including ACE inhibitors, ARBs)Blood thinner (including warfarin)Diuretic (water pill, including furosemide, thiazides)Medicine to treat depression (including SNRIs, SSRIs)Steroid medicineStomach medicine (including antacids)

  • Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness
  • Rapid weight gain, swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet
  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Blistering, peeling, or red skin rash
  • Bloody or black, tarry stools, severe stomach pain, vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
  • Change in how much or how often you urinate, painful or difficult urination
  • Chest pain that may spread, trouble breathing, coughing up blood, unusual sweating, fainting
  • Dark urine or pale stools, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, yellow skin or eyes
  • Numbness or weakness on one side of your body, sudden or severe headache, problems with vision, speech, or walking
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea, passing gas, stomach upset
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Swelling of feet or legs or weight gain
  • Dizziness
