Doxercalciferol injection is used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism (a condition in which the body produces too much parathyroid hormone [PTH; a natural substance needed to control the amount of calcium in the blood] in people receiving dialysis (medical treatment to clean the blood when the kidneys are not working properly). Doxercalciferol injection is in a class of medications called vitamin D analogs. It works by helping the body to use more of the calcium found in foods or supplements and regulating the body's production of parathyroid hormone.

Injection routeYour doctor will prescribe your dose and schedule. This medicine is given through a needle placed in a vein. It is usually given after your dialysis treatment.

This medicine is not right for everyone. You should not receive it if you had an allergic reaction to doxercalciferol, or if you have high levels of calcium or vitamin D.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have liver disease, bone disease, or a history of hypercalcemia.

This medicine may cause the following problems:Hypercalcemia (high calcium in the blood)Bone problems, including adynamic bone disease with high risk of fractures

Do not use vitamin D, phosphate, or calcium supplements, or antacids or other medicines containing magnesium without asking your doctor.

Use this medicine at least 1 hour before or 4 to 6 hours after taking cholestyramine, mineral oil, or other products that may affect fat absorption.

Some medicines can affect how doxercalciferol works. Tell your doctor if you are using digoxin, erythromycin, glutethimide, ketoconazole, phenobarbital, or a diuretic (water pill).
