Fluorouracil cream and topical solution are used to treat actinic or solar keratoses (scaly or crusted lesions [skin areas] caused by years of too much exposure to sunlight). Fluorouracil cream and topical solution are also used to treat a type of skin cancer called superficial basal cell carcinoma if usual types of treatment cannot be used. Fluorouracil is in a class of medications called antimetabolites. It works by killing fast-growing cells such as the abnormal cells in actinic keratoses and basal cell carcinoma.

Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to use. Do not use more than directed.

This medicine is for use only on your skin. Do not get any of this medicine near or around your eyes, nose, or mouth. Rinse it off right away if it does get on these areas.

Topical application routeWash your hands with soap and water before and after you use this medicine.

Topical application routeApply a thin layer of the medicine to the affected area. Rub it in gently.

You may use a glove, nonmetal applicator, or your fingers to apply this medicine.

Topical application routeDo not cover the treated area with a bandage unless directed by your doctor.

Missed dose: Topical application routeApply a dose as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and apply a regular dose. Do not apply extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.

Keep this medicine away from pets. Do not allow pets to contact the skin where the medicine is applied. Throw away or clean any cloth or applicator that may still have some of this medicine. Do not leave any medicine on your hands, clothing, carpet, or furniture.

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to fluorouracil, if you are pregnant, or if you have dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) enzyme deficiency.

It is not safe to take this medicine during pregnancy. It could harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant.

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or if you have other skin problems.

This medicine may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Wear sunscreen. Do not use sunlamps or tanning beds.

Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.
