Vitamin D (Ergocalciferol)

Drug Info for vitamin d (ergocalciferol)

Ergocalciferol is used in the treatment of hypoparathyroidism (condition in which the body does not produce enough parathyroid hormone), refractory rickets (softening and weakening of bones that does not respond to treatment), and familial hypophosphatemia (rickets or osteomalacia caused by an inherited condition with a decreased ability to break down vitamin D in the body). Ergocalciferol is in a class of medications called vitamin D analogs. It works by helping the body to use more of the calcium found in foods or supplements.

Ergocalciferol is a form of vitamin D used to treat and prevent rickets and osteomalacia. It is also used to treat low levels of calcium or phosphate caused by hypoparathyroidism, pseudohypoparathyroidism and familial hypophosphatemia. Ergocalciferol increases the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the body. It is indicated for use by adults and children. This medication is available as a liquid.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease.

The capsule contains a yellow dye called tartrazine, which may cause serious allergic reactions (including asthma). Tell your doctor if you have any allergies (including an aspirin allergy).
